# Projects and Chats

> Use research projects, device-folder coding projects, and correctly scoped chats.

OSPRI Science has two project surfaces with different jobs.

## Research projects

A research Project can store chats, workspace files, sources, learnings, standing context, and a saved model preference. Create one from **+** beside Projects or **+ New project** on Home.

| Level        | Meaning                             |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------- |
| **Personal** | Belongs to you                      |
| **Team**     | Shared with a defined group         |
| **Company**  | Organization-wide and admin-created |

<Warning>
  Project sources, learnings, and standing context are used by project-aware OSPRI Cloud research paths. Current local direct-provider chat does not automatically inject all of that material. Attach the needed files and state the needed instructions in the chat when using the local direct lane.
</Warning>

## Coding projects

**+ Coding project** creates or adopts a folder on this computer for software work. The flow can:

* Create a new folder from an available template
* Adopt an existing safe folder
* Initialize Git when requested
* Open a local project chat
* Start a durable **Deep build** from the Code panel

A coding project is device-folder authority. It is separate from the research Project list even when both describe the same scientific effort.

## Chat scope

* Home shows up to ten recent chats in its card list.
* The rail on Home uses a global chat scope.
* A project page scopes the rail to that project.
* A chat page scopes the rail to the open chat's project.
* Search can find older and unfiled chats that are not in the ten Home cards.

Use `⌘K` on Mac or `Ctrl+K` on Windows to search.

## New chat behavior

| Where you are | Where New chat goes |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| Home                  | Starts unfiled                                            |
| Research project page | Filed in that visible project |
| Existing chat | Uses the current chat's project or coding-project context |

Chats can be renamed, moved to another research project, unfiled, or deleted from their action menu.

## Files and context

Project workspace files can sync with the Brain vault. Files created inside a coding project remain governed by that device folder and its local project permissions unless a separate publish or upload action is approved.

See [Tools, Files, and Generations](/science-desktop/tools-files-and-generations) for the difference between Files, Artifacts, Generations, and Code.
